Biography
YOUNG, ROSS, sales manager and financial security advisor; b. 20 March 1962 in Souris, son of "Johnny" Ross Young* and Flelen Rae MacLean; m. 30 December 1994 Mary Rita Sullivan, and they had three children, Laura Victoria, John Ross, and Jay Sullivan; Protestant. Young, a Liberal, was first elected to the Legislative Assembly in a by-election held 18 March 1991 for 1st Kings. He was re-elected in the general election of 1993. He was defeated in the general election of 1996 in the new electoral district of Souris-Elmira. The 1991 by-election was called due to the death of Young's father, "Johnny" Ross Young, who represented 1st Kings from 1978 to 1990. In 1994 Young introduced a private member's bill which laid out the current electoral districts first used in the 1996 general election. Young received his early education at Souris Regional High School. In 1984 he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick. During his time at Mount Allison, Young played on the football team. He was an AUAA all-star, a CIAU all-star, and served as co-captain and assistant coach of the team. Following university, he managed a Wacky Wheatley's store, one of Atlantic Canada's largest electronic and carpet retailers. In 1989 he joined the Atlantic Television Network as an account executive in Saint John. In 1991 he attended the University of Prince Edward Island. Young is currently a financial advisor with Freedom 55 Financial in Charlottetown. Young was a member of the Kings County Exhibition Association, the Souris Ski Club, and the Souris Curling Club. He coached the Eastern Kings Wildcat football team and was a board member of the Prince Edward Island Tackle Football Program. He was a board member with Prince Edward Island United Way and with the John Howard Society. From 2000 to 2002, Young co-chaired the annual Canadian Mental Health fundraising golf tournament. He is a board member of Junior Achievement of PEI, president of Mount Allison 5th Quarter Club, and secretary- treasurer of the Former MLAs Association. Young is also chair of the Junior Achievement Tuna Tournament, which was revived in 2000. Ross Young and his family live in Vernon River. Mary Sullivan Young was born 4 May 1959.
