Biography
YOUNG, CHARLES FRANK ROSS "JOHNNY", businessperson; b. 1 September 1931 in Red Point, son of Major Ralph Young and Nellie Mossey; m. 27 July 1955, Helen MacLean of Kingsboro, and they had tour children, Bonnie, Lynda, Ross*, and Shelley; Baptist; d. 7 March 1990 in Red Point. Young, a Liberal, was first elected to the Legislative Assembly in the general election of 1978 for 1st Kings. He was re-elected in the general elections of 1979, 1982, 1986, and 1989. He served as Deputy Speaker and Party Whip. In 1986 Young was appointed Minister of Fisheries, and served in this Ministry until 1989. The position meant a great deal to Young, as his family had a strong background in the fishery. In 1990 Young served constituents from his bedside, until only hours before his death from cancer. In the by-election held after his death, his seat in the Legislature was filled by his son Ross, w'ho served in the Legislature until 1996. Young, or "Johnny," as he was called, received his education in Red Point, North Lake, and Montague, following which he spent a few years working in Montague and Toronto. In 1952 he returned to Red Point where he began operating an Esso Service Station. Young was a farm equipment dealer for Massey Ferguson. He also operated a service station in Souris for a number of years. In 1970, Young, along with his wife, and his sister Doris, began operating the Sea Breeze Motel and Restaurant in Kingsboro. Along with numerous political and business involvements, Young was involved in his community. He served as a trustee of the Red Point School Board from 1956 to 1974. Young was president of the Eastern Kings Community Improvement Committee and a founding director of the Eastern Kings Fire Department. He held the position of president of the Souris Lions Club and was active in both the I'1 Kings and Cardigan Liberal Associations. He was a member of the East Point Baptist Church. Johnny Ross Young died 7 March 1990.
